Most authors write a book and then start thinking about marketing it. But the #1 secret to writing books that sell is doing the marketing research BEFORE you write your book- whether you already have a topic in mind or not.

I know this sounds scary to a lot of authors. They don’t know where to start or what to do, so in this article, I’m laying out the five steps to doing the marketing research that will guarantee you can sell your book!

  1. First, you have to figure out what you are passionate about and what skills you have because you won’t stick to writing your book if you aren’t passionate about it; you won’t have the skill to pull it off, and you won’t stick with your marketing plan, so this is critical.
  2. Second, find a target market that has a problem you can solve using your passion and skill set to your advantage. To do this, you have to figure out where your market hangs out, and then you have to listen to their problems and concerns. (I’ll share some ways on how to do that in the next article.) It helps if you have an affinity for the market (i.e.you understand them) so it’s easy to connect with them through your copy. Therefore the best markets are ones that you are a member of, or you work closely with, or you’ve been working with it for so long that you “get” it.
  3. Third, you want to delve deeper and make sure that your target market has money to spend and that they can’t wait to spend it on what you are going to be offering. Otherwise, you won’t make money! For example: let’s say you were interested in sports and you couldn’t decide between targeting golfers or tennis players. By doing the research, you would discover that golfers are fanatical, have the money to spend and will spend it on anything and everything golf related. Tennis players will not.
  4. Look at the competition. See what they offer and what you can do better or different that will make you stand out in the marketplace and make people want to buy from you and/or work with you over anyone else, and figure out why they should start with you NOW because urgency is important. You have to get them to take action while they are excited and motivated.
  5. Find the best keywords and categories for your topic. This is important because you need the best keyword to write your title (including subtitle) and to use in your marketing materials, so you give your market what they want and they are able to find your book when they are looking for your topic. Choosing the right categories will also help your audience find your book.

Doing the research before you write your book, will help you position it so it stands out from the other books, connects with your audiences, and is easy to find. If you write your book first and then start thinking about the marketing, you may find that it’s not a topic your audience is interested in or wants to buy, you may have a great topic, but you haven’t used the best words in your title to describe it, so it isn’t connecting with your audience, or they may not be able to find it at all and then you’ve wasted a lot of time, energy, and perhaps money on a book you can’t sell. So, do the research first, then start the writing process with the peace of mind knowing that you’re writing a book you can sell!
