How Can I Connect with my Target Market?
To find out where your market hangs out, you have to know the keywords that they would use. You can start by doing a brain dump. Think of all the words you think your market might use to find you.
If you have a community or email list, ask them what words they might use to look you up if they were looking for your topic.
For instance, if you were a life coach, you could search under that term.
You could also go to www.Wordtracker.com and do a search on “life coach” to see what other words your market might look for if they were looking for a life coach.
When I searched there, another work that came up was lifestyle coach. And under that, there were specific types of coaches: business coach, executive coach etc. So, depending on what your specialty is, you could niche down even more.
Then, you could do a search in groups in Facebook and LinkedIn using those same keywords. You could also look in Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest (especially if you cater to moms and women-they are big on Pinterest).
Once you find the groups, read the posts and the comments. This will show you what people’s problems and concerns are.
You could also do an ask campaign. In an ask campaign, you ask, “What is your number one question about X? If you have an email list and/or community you may ask there. If you don’t, you can create a sponsored ad and ask your target audience that way.
Or, you could offer to coach prospects one-on-one and in your conversations ask them what challenges they are having. This will give you clues as to what you can solve for them now as well as in the future.
Knowing what problems you can solve for a target market is not only the key to writing a bestseller, but to a successful business as well. So, don’t guess, do the work, find out what people actually want that you can provide, and give it to them!
